Security cameras are an important part of any home security system. Years ago, you were limited to the types of cameras available for home use. Today, there is a wide variety on the market. But how do you know what is the best home security camera for your system?
First, you should determine what you want to accomplish with your cameras. Do you want…
- An easy-to-install camera?
- A camera to check in on your youngsters at night?
- A camera to keep watch on your yard or pool area?
- A camera to keep track of who goes in and out entrance doors?
Types of Camera Resolutions
The standard resolutions for today’s security cameras are a far cry from the grainy images often associated with older cameras. Today you can get cameras with:
- 720p resolution
- 1080p resolution
- 1440p resolution
- 1920p resolution
- 4K/2160p resolution
Motion-Activated Cameras
Motion-activated cameras are triggered when someone or something passes in front of them. Most of these cameras allow you to adjust their sensitivity. You shouldn’t have to worry about the rain, bugs, or even birds setting them off. Some can even be adjusted to ignore the movements of pets like cats and dogs, so you don't get a lot of extra footage of your furry friend traipsing around the house.
Some motion-activated cameras are also voice activated. They allow you to speak to whomever trips the camera via a smartphone app.
Interior and Exterior Cameras
You can purchase cameras that are designed for external use, internal use, or both. An exterior camera is built to withstand exposure to moisture, heat, and other environmental factors while protecting its inner electronics.
Hardwired and Wireless Cameras
Security cameras require some type of power source. An advantage many hardwired cameras have is they are powered through wiring connected to the security system. Wireless cameras (as their name implies) don't have to be wired in to the system, meaning they're easier to install. They do however have to be either plugged into an electrical outlet or powered by a battery.
Night Vision Cameras
Some security cameras come with night vision capabilities, though what type of night vision varies by model. If you want to be able to capture images in the dark, whether external or internal, you will either need this feature, or you'll need to pair your cameras with motion-activated lights.
Which Camera Should You Choose?
If you're building a DIY home security system, you want the cameras you choose to be compatible with the rest your system. If, instead, you choose not to have a connected, integrated system, wireless cameras could be the best next thing for you. Regardless of whether you have a security system or not, the best home security cameras:
- Are motion-activated for the best results
- Can pan or zoom images
- Can store or transmit footage that you can easily access
- Have a high resolution, of at 1080p or better for clear, crisp images
